Mother Teresa once said:
"It's not how much we give, but much love we put into giving"
It's been such a joy to have led a Youth Expedition Project (YEP) group to Cambodia. I have so many things to be grateful for. On reflection, I want to say we are so blessed. Firstly, our efforts and time spent in pre-expedition activities and preparation for the trip were all worth it. The pre-expedition activities provided an opportunity for the YEP groups to bond. We got to know each other better. We worked together for the various tasks that were assigned with much dedication and commitment. Then the pre-trip preparation, which gave everyone a good idea of what to expect in Cambodia. I believe that minimised the no. of cuts and insect bites we got. Although some of us did get a bit more bites than the rest :)
Secondly, our enthusiasm displayed at house building. I was heartened by the never-say-die attitude we displayed. Although we were clearly out of our comfort zone, but we shone because we persisted. Inspite of the heat, we continued in our shaving (of bamboo), nailing and sawing. It was hot, it was dusty, it was uncomfortable but none of us complained and everyone carried on with a smile. We were devoted and we shown we wanted to do our bit no matter how small.
Thirdly, our resilience. I was impressed by how we would not give in to fatigue. I know the pace was quick... waking up so early and not rest till the sun is down. And we did it 6 days in a row. And even when some of us were unwell, you did not feel that you were entitled to rest until the task is complete. Thankfully, we got well quick. And this is all thanks to the care and concern you have shown each other. We did not complain when we have to do more because one of us is down. But instead we assure those of us who were unwell to rest well and not to worry about the tasks at hand.
Finally, our love for the less-fortunate. This was evident from the various activities we completed in Hope Village Prey Veng (HVPV). You brought alive the quotation by Mother Teresa. You brought much joy and laughter to the orphans. You went about your assigned tasks with so much love and dedication. Because of the love we put into giving, we received much much more in return.
